GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- After winning the first set, Gwynedd Mercy saw Moravian take the next three to go and win, 3-0, Thursday night at The Griffin Complex. Set scores were 22-25, 25-10, 26-24, and 25-22.
The Griffins were trying to force a fifth and final set, as they led by as much as 17-9 in the fourth. The Greyhounds would score the last six points of the match, taking their first lead of the set, to go on and clinch it.
Individually,
Casey Griffith paced the offense with a match-high 16 kills.
Samantha Schearer added nine while
Brittany Albert had seven.
Jessica Behr tied a career high with three solo blocks to go along with five enders.
Kerry McGlinn was a dig shy of a double double, as the setter handed out 32 assists and nine digs.
Moravian had four players reach double-digit kills led by Erin Tiger and Brooke Kusmider who each had 13 respectively. Tiger would chip in five blocks (three solo). Taylor Kornmann and Mary Zacher contributed 12 and 11 kills apiece.
In the first set, the teams were neck and neck until GMercyU built an 18-12 lead off an ace from Albert. The Greyhounds would go on a 9-2 spurt to take a 21-20 lead to force a Gwynedd timeout. Now trailing 22-21, the Griffins used a big rally, getting a kill from Schearer, a double block from Schearer and
Liz Schule. The duo would ice the set with back-to-back kills for the 25-22 edge.
The second set saw GMercyU struggle offensively, totaling just seven kills as the Greyhounds got out to a 5-1 lead and did not look back. The third set got off to a similar start, as the deficit grew to as much as 21-10. But a big surge courtesy of a 14-3 streak warmed up the crowd and got the team to knot things up at 24-24. However, after a Moravian timeout, the Greyhounds responded with two-straight kills from Tiger to move things to the fourth and decisive set.
Moravian setter Victoria Kauffman handed out 50 assists with her nine digs, four aces, and two kills. The team hit .248 (58-20-153) on the night with eight blocks. The Griffins ran off a 44-22-146 (.137) hitting line. The seven k ills for Albert were a season-high while Schearer had a personal-best three blocks.
Gwynedd Mercy heads up to Clarks Summit on Saturday for a Colonial States Athletic Conference clash.
