GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy looked to rally all the way back from a 2-0 deficit, but it was Bryn Mawr escaping The Griffin Complex with a 3-2 win Thursday night in a spirited non-conference matchup. Set scores were 26-24, 25-20, 14-25, 21-25, 23-21. Despite 41 ties and 18 lead changes, the fifth set alone provided the most drama, as a total of 15 ties and eight lead changes would take place, including several key points to extend the match.
Casey Griffith had quite the night, totaling a career-high 33 kills, which is the most in at least 12 seasons and will be researched for any school or league records. Griffith also added a season-best 28 digs along with four aces.
Brittany Albert added seven kills and 14 digs while
Samantha Schearer totaled six kills and 10 digs.
Laura Kirk chipped in 23 digs and three aces from her libero position.
For the Owls (3-12), Camille Baechler and Caroline Cosby each registered 15 kills apiece. Baechler would kick in 17 digs and four blocks (one solo).
After both teams fought back from deficits in the first set, the Griffins (9-12) looked to pull away, taking a 23-22 lead off a double block from Schearer and
Liz Schule. But the Owls responded with two-straight points to get to set point. Griffith's eight kill of the set would prevent that, tying it up at 24-24. Bryn Mawr put it away with two kills to etch out the 26-24 win.
In the second, Gwynedd led just once before the Owls went ahead and would lead by as much as eight (17-9). GMercyU would get it as close as 20-18 courtesy of a 9-3 run, but could not pull closer.
The third set saw the Griffins score three points in a row to break an early 5-5 tie and not look back en route to the 25-14 win. The fourth was much closer as neither team led by more than three points. Additionally, both squads were tied 11 times in the set, the last coming at 20-20. Gwynedd would get a kill and an ace from Griffith in front of a kill from Albert to force a fifth and deciding set.
The final set, in which the first team to get to 15 and win by two, was full of scoring swings, as the Griffins used one early to go up 5-2, but the Owls used their momentum to take a 9-8 lead. The pendulum swung back towards Gwynedd's favor in the form of five-straight points to lead 13-9. But you guessed it, Bryn Mawr put together five points in a row of their own to get to match point. But the Griffins would not let it end, rallying to take a one-point edge. The team would have six tries to notch the ending point, but could not get the clincher. Bryn Mawr got the last two points at 21-21 to end the marathon night.
Gwynedd Mercy will turn their attention to Immaculata where they'll head on Saturday for a CSAC clash.
