HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Behind a season-high 21 aces, the Gwynedd Mercy Volleyball Team swept a tight CSAC match at Centenary, 3-0, Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, and 29-27.
Samantha Schearer led the ace party with a career-best eight.
Liz Schule served up six while
Casey Griffith added three and
Laura Kirk and
Brittany Albert each kicked in two.
Schule led all attackers with a season-high 10 kills. Griffith and Schearer were right behind with eight apiece as GMercyU totaled a hitting line of 35-17-108 (.167) which was third best this season. The win also snaps a three-game skid.
In the first set, Gwynedd (9-11, 4-3 CSAC) would use a 7-2 run as Schule served up three aces in the spurt to help break a 4-4 tie to force a Cyclone timeout. Later a 6-1 sprint opened up a one-point lead. Griffith's fourth kill of the set would cement the 25-19 score.
The second set had GMercyU breaking through with a late 5-0 run to take a lead. Centenary would rally to tie it at 23-23, but a kill from Schule and an ace from Schearer was enough to go up 2-0.
Drama was aplenty in the third as the set featured 14 ties and 10 lead changes. Centenary was the one using a run, outscoring the Griffins 14-4 to take a 23-16 lead. But back came Gwynedd, rallying to get it to 24-23. After an ace from Schule to knot the game up at 24-24, the Cyclones would take leads with the chance to win it three times, but the Griffins were able to answer the call. Schearer's kill made it 27-27 and after a point on a blocking error,
Laura Kirk would seal the win with, what else, an ace for the 3-0 sweep.
Zoey Woody recorded a double-double for Centenary (1-19, 0-7 CSAC) with 18 assists and 11 digs.
Gwynedd Mercy travels to Immaculata on Saturday for an important CSAC matchup.
