Fifth Win In A Row For Men's Basketball

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team posted a 90-68 victory at Centenary College on Saturday for their fifth win in a row. With the victory, the Griffins remain unbeaten in Colonial States Athletic Conference action and sweep the season series with the Cyclones.

Senior Julian Hyden led the Griffins with a game-high 25 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.  Cedric Elleby and Darnell Artis each posted 19 points as GMercyU reached the 90-point plateau for the third-straight game. Elleby also notched his sixth double-double on the year, pulling down 13 rebounds. Arron Goodman chipped in with 14.

The Griffins (10-5, 8-0 CSAC) found themselves in an early 7-2 hole but would bounce right back with a 7-0 run capped off by an Elleby layup. In the first half, both teams would go back and forth trading baskets and lead changes.  An Artis jumper would give GMercyU a 22-18 lead with 13:40 remaining. The Cyclones would respond regaining the lead 27-24 with 12:11 left.  A three-point basket by Rip Engel put the Griffins up for good 36-33 with just over seven minutes remaining till the break. Another Artis jumper stretched the lead to nine with 3:26 left. The Griffins would hold a 47-42 lead going into the break.

Gwynedd used another 7-0 run to start the second half capped off by another Elleby layup to go up 54-42 to force a Centenary timeout. The Griffins would hold the twelve-point lead on a pair of Hyden free throws with just over seven minutes remaining.

For the game the Griffins shot 30-of-67(48.8%) making nine three pointers and connecting on 20-of-29 (72.4%) from the foul line. Gwynedd held Centenary to 27-of-64 (42.4%) shooting, including just 29% in the second half, limiting them to seven three pointers and seven made free throws.

Gwynedd outrebounded Centenary 46-32 with eighteen offensive rebounds leading to fifteen second chance points.

The Cyclones (9-6, 5-3 CSAC) were led in scoring by Rashaan Spencer with 18 points.

The Griffins return back to action on Wednesday when they will host Cairn University here at The Griffin Complex as part of a CSAC Doubleheader. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
