GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy picked up two wins in sweeping their home tri-match with Cedar Crest and New Jersey City on Saturday at the Griffin Complex by identical scores of 3-0.
Set scores against the Falcons were 26-24, 25-19, and 25-14 and with the match with the Gothic Knights, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-22.
In the CSAC victory over Cedar Crest, the Griffins (4-10, 2-0 CSAC) were aces up as the team surpassed its season high in service aces with 18. Junior
Laura Kirk (Saegertown, Pa./Maplewood) led the party with eight.
Things didn't get off on a good foot, as the Falcons raced out to a 6-0 lead. That's when Kirk rotated to the server's spot and delivered six aces as part of a nine-point run. Later the team would trail 24-19 and fight off the set point, by scoring the next seven and eventually end it with, what else, an ace, this time from freshman
Samantha Schearer (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights).
The second set would have GM build a 20-12 lead and have to hold off the Falcons to notch the 25-19 win. In the third, it was all Griffins from the get go, as a kill from sophomore
Jessica Behr (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Charter) put Gwynedd ahead, 11-1. The team would total 12 of its 26 kills in the third set alone. Sophomore
Michaela Wyatt (Worcester, Pa./Methacton), seeing her first action of the season, would end the match naturally, with an ace just inside the line.
Shearer and senior
Brianna Greer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) each had seven kills and three aces apiece. Ericka Clayton totaled a match-high eight kills for the Falcons (1-10, 0-2 CSAC).
Cedar Crest would then take on New Jersey City, but
lose a 3-1 decision (20-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15).
In the day's final match, GM would total just seven aces, three of which came from
Lauren Martin (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), as the sophomore setter added 18 assists, five digs and a kill. In set one, a 10-2 run turned a 7-6 NJCU lead into a 16-9 Gwynedd advantage. Gwynedd would get it to 21-13 only to see the Gothic Knights use one of their rallies to pull within 21-19. Kirk would seal up set #1 with a kill.
In the second, it was the Griffins who came back from a 16-12 to tie it at 20-20. From there, GM took advantage of New Jersey City's errors to score three-straight points and eventually pull out the 25-22 win. The third set saw Gwynedd get ahead early, building up a lead of 17-8. GM would fend off a late push from NJCU to close out their second sweep of the day.
Shearer had six kills while Behr, Kirk, and senior
Lauren Tressel (Pembroke, Ma./Pembroke) each added five. Rachel McIntyre recorded a double-double (21 assists/11 digs) for the Gothic Knights (6-6).
Gwynedd Mercy will continue conference play on Wednesday when they head to Centenary before a match at Rutgers-Camden on Thursday. They'll close out the week with a match at Rosemont.
