Volleyball Sweeps Cyclones, Wins Fourth Straight

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy rattled off its fourth-straight win in defeating Centenary Wednesday night, 3-0. Set scores were 25-15, 25-11,and 25-17.

The Griffins (6-10, 3-1 CSAC) hit .164 on the night (33-14-116) including a 14-kill effort in the third and deciding set. The team also was good on 68% of its sideouts (30-44) and reached double digits in aces for the fourth time this season.

Brianna Greer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) led the hit parade with nine kills, one shy of tying her career high, as the senior hit a career-best .286. Senior Lauren Tressel (Pembroke, Ma./Pembroke) and freshman Samantha Schearer (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) each added five kills apiece while Tressel totaled 18 digs.

Gwynedd found their groove in the first set, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 14-7 lead to force the Cyclones to call a timeout. GM would net the last six points to take it, 25-15. It was more of the same in the second as the Griffins ran out to 12-2 lead and not look back.

In the third set, the teams went back and forth until an ace from Schearer was part of a three-point run midway through the set which gave the Griffins the lead for good.

Jamie Bierbaum led the Cyclones (1-10, 0-3 CSAC) with six kills as Centenary recorded a 17-15-94 (.021) hitting line.

The Griffins get right back at it tomorrow night when they head to Rutgers-Camden for a non-conference matchup starting at 7 p.m.
