GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --With a 3-0 win over visiting Summit, the Gwynedd Mercy University Volleyball team notched its first CSAC victory of the season. Set scores were 25-13, 25-14, and 27-25.
The win also ends a five-match winless streak as well.
Senior
Lauren Tressel (Pembroke, Ma./Pembroke) paced the Griffins with 11 kills and 18 digs, both match-highs. As a team, Gwynedd registered 16 aces which is a season high. Tressel and junior
Laura Kirk (Saegertown, Pa./Maplewood) led the way with four each.
The Griffins (3-10, 1-1 CSAC) took the first two sets and battled back from a big hole in the third, including two set points, to clinch it.
In that third set, GM fell behind 10-3 before a string of five-straight points forced the Defenders to call a timeout. Summit came out of the timeout and went on a run of their own, scoring five points in a row to reclaim an eight-point edge. Down 17-11 and with
Rachael Hall (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) serving, the Griffins took use of three Summit hitting errors as part of an eight-point swing. Hall's ace gave Gwynedd its first lead of the set (18-17). Now with the teams knotted at 22-22, the Defenders would get to set point only to see GM force their way back in it, getting a kill from Kirk, a big solo block from senior
Brianna Greer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and an ace from rookie
Samantha Schearer (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and Gwynedd was back on top.
Tressel would help end the night as her kill broke a 25-25 tie and her ensuing service ace gave GM the 27-25 win.
Callie Kitowski led the Defenders (1-13, 0-1 CSAC) with seven kills and a game-high five blocks (four solo). She was one of four players to finish with exactly 13 digs apiece.
Greer totaled four kills and a solo block while Hall added three aces, 12 digs, and was moved to setter in the third set to total five of her seven assists. Shearer and sophomore
Jessica Behr (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Charter) recorded five kills each. Behr would add a pair of solo blocks as well.
Gwynedd Mercy will host a tri-match on Saturday with Cedar Crest and New Jersey City. The Griffins square off with the Falcons in a CSAC contest at 11 a.m. and later the Gothic Knights at 3 p.m. Sandwiched in between, Cedar Crest will take on NJCU.
