Volleyball No Match For Neumann

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Neumann handed Gwynedd Mercy a 3-0 setback in the Griffins' CSAC opener Tuesday night at the Griffin Complex. Set scores were 25-23, 25-11, and 25-14.

As a team, Gwynedd had a negative hitting percentage for the second time this season, going 14-16-89 for the night. Freshman Samantha Schearer (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) totaled five kills on a team-high 21 attacks. Junior Laura Kirk (Saegertown, Pa./Maplewood) registered her fourth-straight game with double-digit kills, registering a match-high 15.

The first set featured 13 ties and five lead changes as the two squads never led by more than four points at any time. Gwynedd had seven of their 14 kills in the set but it was the Knights who totaled 14. After a timeout trailing 23-19, GM rallied for three points in a row as an ace from senior Lauren Tressel (Pembroke, Ma./Pembroke) brought the Griffins within one point. Neumann's Anna Waltz would then collect two of her game-high 13 kills as part of three-straight points for the Knights to take set #1, 25-23.

Gwynedd managed just two kills in the second set, and could not recover from an early 12-4 deficit. In the third with the score tied at 5-5, Neumann would score 10 of the next 12 points to open up a double-figure lead to help put the match away

Waltz and Rachael Hoffman (11 kills) led the Knights (7-7, 2-0 CSAC), who hit .327 (43-10-101) for the contest.

The Griffins (2-10, 0-1 CSAC) will look to snap their four-match winless streak on Thursday when they entertain Summit here in a 7 p.m. start.
