true Swarthmore 4, Gwynedd Mercy 1
BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Swarthmore's Nathan Booth tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts to lead the Garnet to a 4-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Monday in non-conference action.
Junior
David Blount (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) had two of the seven hits for the Griffins (8-18).
Ryan Burnett and Nate Dow were each 3-for-4 on the day for Swarthmore (18-17). Dow would score on a sac fly to right in the fifth for the game's first run. In the sixth with runners on the corners, the Garnet executed a suicide squeeze to score another run to go up 2-0.
The Griffins would get that run back in the bottom half when freshman
Brett Kozlowski (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent), who reached on an error at short, scored from third on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half.
In the seventh, Burnett delivered an RBI double and in the eighth, Swarthmore had runners on second and third with no outs. With the infield drawn in, Cal Barnett-Mayotte was able to get a ball through to left to score a run to up the lead to 4-1.
The Griffins had just three left on base up until the ninth, where they looked to put something together. With two outs and a runner on first, junior
Christian Carmolingo (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine) blooped a single into left, followed by freshman
Shaughn Wright (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) who worked a walk on a full count to load the bases. Booth would get the third out as senior
Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine) tapped a grounder back to the mound.
Elfreth took the loss as he went five innings, yielding one run on four hits with three walks and two K's.
Gwynedd Mercy resumes play on Friday when they open up a weekend set at Keystone for a single game starting at 3 p.m. Action continues on Saturday when the teams meet in Gwynedd Valley for a doubleheader starting at noon.
