BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --The Griffins dropped the series finale to Marywood, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers scored five runs in the fourth inning to break open a 1-1 game. The Griffins were able to cut the deficit to four in the final frame but were unable to get any closer, as the team left 12 runners on base on the day.
After an RBI single put GMercyU in a 1-0 deficit, Gwynedd (4-14, 4-6 CSAC) answered in the bottom of the first when
Chris Hens (Horsham, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham) scored
Jason Mulvey (Bensalem, Pa. / Bensalem) on a ground out.
The Pacers (14-5, 7-3 CSAC) put pressure on the Griffins in the fourth loading the bases with no outs. Nic Arrue would single to give Marywood a 2-1 lead. The first four batters of the inning would score for the Pacers scoring five runs in the frame with just one out.
The Griffins would cut the lead to 7-3 on a pair of runs by
Christian Carmolingo (Sewell, N.J. / St. Augustine) and Mulvey.
Brett Kozlowski (Warminster, Pa. / William Tennent) would drive in Carmolingo with a one-out single. Mulvey would come around to score after reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring on an error.
The Pacers answered in the sixth when Erik Pulkkinen would score for the second time in the game.
Trailing 8-3 in the ninth
Justin Forktus (Yardley, Pa. / Conwell-Egan) would lead off the inning with a pinch-hit walk and Kozlowski would follow with his third hit of the game. With one out,
Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa. / Conwell-Egan) drove in Forktus cutting the lead to 8-4. However Marywood would retire the next two batters to take the series sweep from the Griffins.
Carmolingo and Kozlowski each collected three hits on the day.
The Griffins return back to action on Monday hosting Immaculata in the series finale. The Griffins will be the away team due to a schedule make up from earlier this year. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
