true 4 AUBURNDALE, FL. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball team participated in the 2015 Russmatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational over spring break, squaring off against nationally ranked opponents in St. John Fisher and Concordia-Chicago as well as interstate rival St. Vincent.
St. John Fisher 8, Gwynedd Mercy 5 | BOX SCOREThe Griffins opened up the trip squaring off against Spring Training rival St. John Fisher on Monday, March 2nd. The Cardinals opened up the game scoring three runs in the top of the first for the early lead. A
Christian Carmolingo (Sewell, N.J. / St. Augustine) single in the second inning would plate
Shaughn Wright (Fairless Hills, Pa. / Pennsbury) to cut the lead to 3-1. Fisher would add another run in the top of the fourth but the Griffins would answer in the bottom of the fifth and seven to cut the lead to 4-3.
Brett Kozlowski (Warminster, Pa. / William Tennant) would score in the fifth after reaching on a two-out error. He later then drove in Carmolingo with his sacrifice fly in the seventh. Fisher would answer with three runs in the top of the eighth but the Griffins wouldn't go quietly, responding with two runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to
Eric Heaney's (Horsham, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham) two-out, two-run  double driving in
Brandon DiCiano (Washington Twp, N.J. / Washington Twp.) and Wright. Fisher would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth to hold the 8-5 lead with Kevin Berge holding the Griffins to a 1-2-3 ninth. Both Carmolingo and
Chris Hens (Horsham, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham) had a pair of hits for the game.
Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa. / Octorara) took the loss, striking out four over five innings of work.
Nick DeRitis (Haddon Twp, N.J. / Haddon Twp.) struck out a pair off batters in his three relief innings.

Concordia Chicago 9, Gwynedd Mercy 2 | BOX SCORE Game 2#8 ranked Concordia University Chicago swept a double header from Gwynedd on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars made a statement in the opener scoring seven runs on five hits in the first inning. The Griffins were able to keep Concordia off the board for the next four innings but were unable to plate any runs themselves until the top of the sixth.
David Blount (Croydon, Pa. / Harry S. Truman) drove in Kozlowski for the Griffins first run. Blount would later score in the inning on a Wright fielder's choice. Blount finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
In game two, the game was scoreless until the fourth. Griffins took a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. Behind a strong pitching performance by
Rick Elfreth (Washington Twp, N.J. / St. Augustine) going scoreless through the first four innings, Gwynedd plated two runs in the bottom half of the fourth starting with a Carmolingo stolen base after a one-out walk. After
Jason Mulvey (Bensalem, Pa. / Bensalem) swung at a third strike and the ball was dropped, the throw down to first from the catcher sailed into right field, allowing Carmlingo to score from second. Kozlowski then would drive in Mulvey with his only hit of the game. Concordia would answer with runs in the fifth (3), sixth (1) and seventh (5). Elfreth would go five strong allowing only three runs with four strikeouts taking the tough luck loss. Mulvey finished 2-for-4 with a double.
St. Vincent 6, Gwynedd Mercy 3 | BOX SCOREThe Griffins finished up their trip on Wednesday against Pennsylvania foe St. Vincent College. The Griffins took a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth. In the top of the fourth and with two outs,
Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa. / Conwell-Egan) reached with a single and Heaney via a walk. Â Carmolingo smacked a double to right center, driving in Fleming. Mulvey would follow with an RBI single to bring Heaney home.
The Bearcats with answer with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, knocking starting pitcher
Matt Rakus (Washington Twp, N.J. / St. Augustine) out of the game. Rakus finished with five strikeouts and just two earned runs over five innings of work.
Gwynedd would cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth when Wright scored with the bases loaded but that was all the Griffins would get in the frame. St. Vincent added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. The Griffins started a two-out rally in the ninth but left runners stranded after a deep fly out to the right field warning track.
Connor Dilks (Pennsville, N.J. / Pennsville) worked three innings in relief allowing just one earned run and striking out one batter. Mulvey and Wright each finished with three hits for the Griffins.
The Griffins will look to return back to action on Wednesday when they travel to #7 nationally ranked Kean University with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday's nine inning game against The College of New Jersey has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
