BOX SCOREHACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy outlasted Centenary, 18-16, on Monday to pick up their first CSAC victory of the season.
The Griffins (4-5, 1-3 CSAC) had nine different players register a goal, led by senior
Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) who led the squad with five. Junior
Brianna Greer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and freshman
Arianna Hensinger (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Camden Catholic) each had three goals apiece as Gwynedd held off a late Cyclone push.
Jumping out to a 5-0 lead from five different goal scorers in the first 7:30 of the contest, Gwynedd would then see Centenary (1-4, 1-3 CSAC) net the next five, the last coming with 12:41 in the stanza to draw the teams even. Yori would tally two goals over the final 6:31 to give GMercyU a 7-5 lead at the half.
The teams would trade goals over a 11:18 of the second before Greer would score three of the next five Griffin goals to up the lead to 16-10 midway through the stanza. After
Sarah Lombardi (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) made it 17-11 with just over nine minutes to go, the Cyclones would net four of their own in a row, pulling within two with 3:44 on the clock. Freshman
Lauren Mitros (Glenside, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) would add an unassisted goal with 14 seconds left. Centenary scored on a free position shot with just over a second remaining to account for the final score.
Christi Gibbs (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) netted two goals for GMercyU while
Kelly Walsh (Lancaster, Pa./Garden Spot),
Aubrey Cook (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) and
Christy Knipe (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) also scored for the Griffins.
Abby Voelkner led all scorers with six goals while teammate Carlie Schmitt added four.
Freshman goalie
Bria Gillard (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) recorded nine stops in net. Her counterpart, Hannah Fisher made 14. The Griffins had a season-high 41 shots and also led in groundballs and draw controls. Yori led the team with three GB's and 10 draws.
Gwynedd Mercy returns to action on Wednesday night when they welcome Cedar Crest in another CSAC matchup starting at 7 p.m. Â
