Senior Rick Elfreth collected his
100th career hit in game twoLANGHORNE, PA. - Gwynedd Mercy defeated Cairn in both games of Saturday's doubleheader 4-3 in game one and 6-1 in the night cap to take the weekend series.
In game one,
Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa. / Conwell-Egan) delivered a walk-off RBI single, knocking in
David Blount (Croydon, Pa. / Harry S. Truman) in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 4-3 victory over the Highlanders.
Matt Rakus (Sewell, N.J. / St. Augustine) picked up the win in relief while
Mike Di Ianni (Egg Harbor Twp, N.J. / Holy Spirit) worked six strong innings to earn the no decision.
The Griffins trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third when
Jason Mulvey (Bensalem, Pa. / Bensalem), tied the game at 1-1 when he scored on a Blount sacrifice fly. With two outs, the Griffins would draw back-to-back walks to set up
Chris Hens (Horsham, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham),who gave GM the 2-1 lead on with his RBI double.
The Highlanders would tie the game 2-2 in the fifth on a Caleb Lang double. Gwynedd would retake the lead 3-2 on a
Shaughn Wright (Fairless Hills, Pa. / Pennsbury) pinch hit RBI single to score
Eric Heaney (Horsham, Pa. / Hatboro-Horsham). Cairn would not go away, capitalizing on a leadoff double which later scored a run on a groundout tie the game 3-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the frame, Blount would reach with a one-out single and moved up to second on a stolen base. With two outs, Fleming sent a ball to center field to plate Blount for the 4-3 victory.
In game two, the Griffins picked up were they left off, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to a Blount RBI single and Fleming RBI double. Senior
Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J. / St. Augustine) would record his 100th hit, becoming the 26th player in program history, in the third inning on his RBI single to score Blount.
The Highlanders would cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning when they used another leadoff double by Caleb Moore to manufacture a run. Gwynedd would however answer in the bottom of the fifth, to plate three runs with RBI singles from Blount and Fleming. Blount went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases along with two runs batted in. Fleming finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's.
Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa. / Octorara) picked up the win for GM in game two as the junior went five innings allowing just one run on four hits.
Connor Dilks (Pennsville, N.J. / Pennsville) would close it out throwing two scoreless innings.
The Griffins will return back to action on Tuesday when they travel to Immaculata in another CSAC contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
