UNION, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy came up short in a late rally as the Griffins fell, 4-3, to sixth-ranked Kean Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing 4-0 after the fourth, Gwynedd got a run across on a wild pitch in the fifth and a bases loaded walk crossed another in the sixth. The Griffins had chances to score more, having the bases loaded in both innings.

Eric Heaney (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pulled Gwynedd within one run in the seventh with his sac fly to score Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine).

In the eighth, the Griffins had runners at the corners but were foiled as a double steal attempt did not execute. Kean reliever Vinny Sanfordino, who entered in the inning prior, worked out of the jam and worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Cougars plated three runs in the third off of Gwynedd starter Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa./Octorara). A two-out RBI double in the next frame put Kean up 4-0.

Elfreth walked four times on the day, a career-high. Junior Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan) and freshman Jason Mulvey (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) had three hits apiece. GMercyU totaled 12 hits, but left 13 men on base.

Gwynedd Mercy is scheduled to open a CSAC weekend series with Immaculata on Friday.
