true Keystone 86, Gwynedd Mercy 80
BOX SCORELAPLUME, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy lost a back-and-forth contest at Keystone, 86-80, on Wednesday night, snapping their four-game win streak.
Sophomore
Cedric Elleby (Monroeville, N.J./Delsea) scored 20 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for his fourth double double this season as both squads combined for 14 lead changes and 12 ties on the evening in a see saw affair.
Junior
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) added 18 points and six assists while senior
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) and sophomore
Arron Goodman (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) also hit double figures with 13 and 11 respectively.
DaVaughn Roberts-Thomas came off the bench for Keystone to finish with 27 points. Duncan Lunsford chipped in 21.
The first half alone saw nine ties and eight lead changes as no team lead by more than five points, which the Giants did early on, only to see the Griffins answer. GM would build a 38-35 lead with just over a minute in the stanza, but after a Gwynedd offensive foul, Lunsford would score a bucket and hit another after a steal right before the buzzer to send the Giants to a 39-38 lead at the half.
The Griffins (13-7, 8-5 CSAC) fought their way to a five-point lead (60-55) only to see Keystone use a 13-2 run to go ahead with 8:43 to play.
Later a three-pointer form Artis and a bucket from Knight would pull GM within three (76-73) at the3:58 mark. Roberts-Thomas would turn the momentum with his hoop and foul, as his three-point play raised the deficit to six.
GM would get a close as three again (81-78) late in the contest, but the Giants (7-13, 7-6 CSAC) hit four-of-six from the free-throw line to help seal the outcome.
Both teams shot just over 48% for the game while the Griffins held a 37-36 rebound edge. Keystone, however, went to the line 32 times, 23 in the second half, where they hit 24 free throws.
Gwynedd Mercy will look to regroup on Saturday when they travel to Marywood for a conference matchup.
