Men's Hoops Notch Win At Defending Champs

ASTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy (3-3, 2-0 CSAC) knocked off the defending conference champion Knights of Neumann on the road, 102-92, to move to 2-0 in CSAC action Wednesday night.

Cedric Elleby led the way for the Griffins with yet another double-double, tying a career-high with 32 points and adding 11 rebounds. Julian Hyden, Aaron Morgan, and Darnell Artis would also register a double-digit performance in the win. Hyden, who was 4-5 from behind the arc, added 20 points with Morgan not far behind chipping in 19. Artis added 10 as he went 4-4 from the charity stripe.

Off to a slow start in the first, the Knights jumped to an 11-2 led before Elleby would switch the momentum, dropping nine of GMercyU's next 11 points. Gwynedd slowly chipped away at the deficit taking their first lead of the game off of a three pointer from Hyden with 10:08 left in the half. A 17-5 run to close the stanza would put the Griffins up, 44-37, at the break despite seven lead changes in the period.

Entering the second, the Griffins kicked their offense into full gear as they maintained the lead for the remainder of the game. The lead grew to as many as 19 points in the second, before the Knights were able to get it to 79-70 with just over six minutes to play. Morgan's three-point play capped a five-point swing for a 14-point lead.

Overall, GM shot 32-of-62 (51.6%) from the floor compared to Neumann's 37-of-76 (48.7%) effort. Leading the way in rebounds, 47-34, the Griffins also took advantage of the Knights foul trouble, going 29-for-35 (82.9%) from the line.

Kevin Green led the way for Neumann (3-4, 0-2 CSAC) with 23 points with DeShawn Lowman not far behind with 22. Jamed Butler would add 17 along with Denzel Yard with 13 and Tyaire Hudson with 12.

GM continues conference play at home on Saturday when they take on Centenary College in a CSAC tilt.  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. following the women's game at 2 p.m.
