SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy's quest for a playoff berth came to an end with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 28-26) defeat at Marywood on Saturday.
The Griffins (9-19, 5-5 CSAC) sit in seventh and trail the sixth and final playoff spot by 1.5 games, but do not hold the tiebreaker to Notre Dame and now Marywood after today's defeat and are officially eliminated  from playoff contention.
Every set had its own story for suspense as each had its share of ties and lead changes. In the first, no team led by more than three points before the Pacers put together a five-point swing after GM would tie it at 19-19, to eventually go on and win 25-22. The stanza featured nine ties.
The second saw similar events occur when Marywood used a 5-0 spurt to turn a one-point lead into an 18-12 lead. A kill from senior
Brianna Greer and an ace by rookie
Samantha Schearer made it 19-16, but MU would score six of the next seven to win, 25-17. GM could not take advantage of Marywood's 7-9-35 (-.057) hitting line as they were just 6-10-37 (-.108).
Marywood would jump ahead early in the third, racing out to an 8-2 edge. With the score 18-14, Gwynedd put together a nice little run netting four-straight points to force the Pacers to call a timeout. After the break, GM tacked on four more points, two courtesy of two big kills from senior
Lauren Tressel for a 22-19 edge. Marywood would make
Gwynedd call a timeout after the Pacers managed a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 23-22.
Tressel along with sophomore
Jessica Behr led GM with eight kills each. Greer and Schearer had three aces apiece.
Mallorie Deschaine led all attackers with 15 kills for the Pacers (7-15, 6-3 CSAC).
Gwynedd Mercy will close out the 2015 season on Wednesday when they head to Keystone at 7 p.m.
