GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy honored its two seniors in its final home matches of the regular season on Saturday. The Griffins would fall, 3-1, to Hood but rebound with a 3-0 victory over Trinity Washington.
Against Hood (25-18, 20-25, 25-7, 25-18), the Griffins and Blazers would split the first two sets, before dropping the next two in unparticular form. GM could not withstand Elena Young's game-high 21 kills, the most against the Griffins by an opposing player this season.
In that third set, things did not get off to smooth start as a pair of kills from Young was part of a 5-1 run to open play. The deficit would grow to 12-6, but after a kill from Tressel, Gwynedd would score just one more point, on a Hood attack error, the rest of the way in a 25-7 loss. Looking to rebound in the fourth set, GM would dig out of an early hole and take advantage of Hood's mistakes to pull within 10-7. Kari Betson would notch five kills as part of a 9-2 run to open up a double-digit lead. One last push put Gwynedd at 22-16, thanks to a pair of kills from Tressel and an ace from freshman
Samantha Schearer, but Betson would register her sixth kill of the set to close out the match.
Tressel nearly had a double-double, leading GM with nine enders and 15 digs. Schearer ended with three aces and tied a season-high with 13 digs.
Prior to the start of the last match of the day vs. Trinity Washington, the team took time to honor their two seniors: Tressel and
Brianna Greer. The two would then go out and help Gwynedd to their third-best hitting match (28-10-84 >.214) on the season. The team would tie a season-high with 18 aces, 12 coming from sophomore setter
Lauren Martin. Martin added 20 assists for her third double-double on the year.
Sophomore
Jessica Behr led the match with 10 kills, three off her season high.
The Griffins play at Cabrini next week needing a win to keep their playoff push alive.
