BOX SCORE

IMMACULATA, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's basketball team hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Immaculata University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up but came up on the wrong end of a 89-81 defeat despite four players scoring in double figures.

Sophomore Arron Goodman (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) led GM (8-4, 3-2 CSAC) with a team-high 19 points along with seven rebounds. Senior Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest) added 17 while junior Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa. / LaSalle College H.S.) and sophomore Cedric Elleby (Monroeville, N.J. / Delsea) added 14 each respectively.

The Griffins found themselves down early in exciting first half action, trailing 14-8 until Gwynedd found an offensive spark with Knight and Goodman layups.  The Mighty Macs would respond with a three pointer to keep their lead.  On the next possession, Goodman would convert his second three-point play of the half to cut the lead to 17-15 but he would pick up his second foul, sending him to the bench at the 11:49 mark. He led the team with 12 first-half points.

Immaculata (7-5, 5-0 CSAC) would stretch their lead to seven before a 9-0 Griffin run to give GM the 24-22 lead.  An Artis three-point play started the run that was capped by a big Elleby dunk. The Mighty Macs would retake the lead 33-32 but the Griffins would end the half on a 14-7 spurt sparked by Elleby's three-point play to give Gwynedd their largest lead of the half at seven.  The Griffins would take a 46-40 lead into the break.

A Knight layup off of a steal stretched the lead to eight right out of the gate. However Immaculata used a 7-0 run to tie the contest 54-54 but an Elleby layup stopped the streak to give GM a 56-54 edge with 15:05 left. Goodman would get going in the second half, putting the Griffins up six with a put back layup.  He would also add a jumper and free throw to give GM a 73-68 lead.  Immaculata responded with a 5-0 run to tie the contest 73-73 with 5:30 remaining.  The Griffins were unable to connect on a field goal over the final 7:28 of the stanza.

Knight would cut the lead to 80-79 but would find his fifth foul with 2:25 remaining.  The Mighty Macs would connect on seven free throws down the stretch to pull away with the 89-81 victory.

Immaculata outrebounded the Griffins, 45-33. The Mighty Macs were led by Roy Ferrell Jr. leading all scorers with 21 points. Ron Melton added 19 and Joshua Smith chipped in 18 off the bench.

The Griffins will look to bounce back on Monday night when they host Marywood University at 7 p.m. at the Griffin Complex.
