BOX SCORE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Sophomore Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) tossed a three-hitter to help Gwynedd Mercy remain alive with a 4-0 win over Immaculata Friday afternoon in an elimination game.

The Griffins (20-17-1) now advance to the championship series at Keystone, needing two wins to unseat the Giants as conference champions, tomorrow with first pitch slated for noon.

Hill racked up five strikeouts and no walks in his first complete game shutout. He did not allow his first hit until the fifth and got out of a big jam in the eighth.

Gwynedd plated runs in key spots in the second, sixth, seventh and eighth to advance to the finals for the 11th time in program history.

Junior Greg Brooks (Voorhees, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep Pa.) tied a personal-high with four hits, while scoring once and driving in one. Senior John Burns (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) added three hits and a run scored.

A single to left from Christopher Hens (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) with two outs in the second gave GM a 1-0 lead as Burns hustled from second to beat the throw home.

Brooks made it 2-0 in the sixth with a two-out double. He is 10-for-11 (.909) during the three games in the playoffs so far.

With runners at the corners in the seventh, Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) grounded out to second, but it was enough to score David Blount (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) for a three-run lead.

The Mighty Macs (21-14) gave it one last push in the eighth as a lead off double from Eli Vottero and a infield single from Patrick Boulware put two on with nobody out. Cassano would get a big out as he was able to snag a foul ball just inside the fence of the Immaculata dugout. Brooks would follow suit with a pop up in foul ground at third. Hill was able to shut down IU as he got a fielder's choice forceout at second to end the threat.

Brooks would score in the eighth off a single to right from Blount to add to the lead.

Hill would get a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth win on the season.

Should the Griffins pull out a win on Saturday, the two teams will play 30 minutes after the first game for a winner-take-all for the conference championship and a berth in the nuNCAA Tournament.
