New Jersey City 9, Gwynedd Mercy 1

BOX SCORE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- New Jersey City broke open a one-run game with five in the seventh to go on and hand Gwynedd Mercy a 9-1 non-conference defeat on a cold and rainy Tuesday afternoon.

The Gothic Knight's Kevin DeMauro limited the Griffins to five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in the complete game victory.

Gwynedd rebounded from a first-inning run from NJCU in the fifth when junior Greg Brooks (Voorhees, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep PA) doubled in junior Eric Heaney (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) to tie it at 1-1.

DeMauro and GM starter Matt Rakus (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine) looked to be locked in a pitcher's duel through five innings.

In the sixth, Eric Giordano reached on a lead-off single. He would move to second as a infield pop up was caught and ensuing throw to try and double him off first was off target. Giordano would score on Nick Ruscingno's cue shot single down the first base line.

Giordano would strike as part of a five-run seventh, singling in two runs. Rakus would exit the game with the bases loaded and three runs across. Two more would score off of reliever Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) as a double play allowed Giordano to score from third and later a wild pitch put the Gothic Knights up 7-1.

Ruscingno would add a two-run infield single in the ninth to account for the scoring.

Rakus struck out five as he went into the seventh, but the junior gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks.

The Griffins (18-13-1) look to rebound on Thursday, May 1st when they welcome York College, weather permitting, in a 3:30 p.m. start.
