BOX SCORELANGHORNE, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Baseball Team scored a win in their CSAC opener, downing Cairn, 16-5, Friday afternoon.
The game was played at Cairn with the Griffins as the designated home team. The two teams will meet tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at noon.
Freshman
Frank Saviski (Aston, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) drove in four runs while going 3-for-5. Senior
John Burns (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) also knocked in three RBIs and had three hits.
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Junior
Rick Elfreth (Washington Twp., N.J./St. Augustine) and sophomore
David Blount (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) reached base without a hit in all five plate appearances. Elfreth tied a single-game mark with five runs scored. The duo each swiped three stolen bases.
Leading 5-4, Gwynedd was able to get some breathing room with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. In the eighth, Saviski's two-run single highlighted a six-run frame, as GM had just three hits, but used three Highlander errors to help put the game out of reach.
Sophomore
Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) got the nod on the mound, and delivered, picking up his first career win. Marchitto threw four innings, yielding three earned runs on two hits.
Jacob Allen was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored for Cairn (2-9, 0-2 CSAC).
