true Haverford 18, Gwynedd Mercy 12
BOX SCOREHAVERFORD, PA. -- Sophomore
Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) drove in six RBIs but Haverford outslugged the Griffins in a wild 18-12 non-conference matchup on Thursday.
Marchitto was 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, and a home run. Junior
Rick Elfreth (Washington Twp, N.J./St. Augustine) was 2-for-3 with four runs including a solo homer.
Haverford used back-to-back five-run innings in the sixth and seventh to hold off a contest that featured eight errors.
The Griffins (6-6) would jump out 2-0 in the first as Marchitto went deep for a two-run blast. After a sac fly in the bottom of the frame to put the Fords within one, Elfreth would hit his first of the season in the third to restore the two-run lead.
From there, in the bottom half, Haverford took advantage of three Griffin errors to score six runs. GM would battle, as Marchitto added a two-run single in the fifth.
Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan) had a two-run single to highlight a four-run sixth, where Gwynedd briefly took a 10-8 lead.
Haverford (6-4) used back-to-back homers in their sixth as part of a five-spot and in the next inning, a three-run longball from Casey Fox earmarked another five runs.
Fox and George Hatamiya (two doubles, homer run) each knocked in five runs.
Marchitto also swiped two bases while senior
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) walked three times and scored twice.
Gwynedd Mercy will open CSAC play this weekend with Cairn. Tomorrow's single game starts at 3 p.m. The game will be played at Cairn with the Griffins as the home team. The two teams will meet on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
