BOX SCORE

EWING, N.J. -- A late go-ahead RBI single gave The College of New Jersey a rain-shortened 4-3 win over Gwynedd Mercy Wednesday afternoon.

The loss snaps the Griffins' three-game win streak. The game was called prior to the bottom of the eighth inning starting due to unplayable field conditions because of the rain. GM (6-5) had actually tied the game in the top of the eighth, but because the inning could not be completed, the score reverted back to the last full inning.

Sophomore Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) had two doubles and scored twice while junior Eric Heaney (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The duo would help Gwynedd get on the board in the second. Heaney's single plated Marchitto, who led off the frame with a double to left for a 1-0 lead.

The Griffins would score twice in the fourth, first off an RBI single from freshman Frank Saviski (Aston, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and later off an error that would score Marchitto.

Starter Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan) cruised through his first four innings, but ran into some trouble in the fifth. The Lions' John Rizzi drove home two with two outs and would later score on a run-scoring hit to knot the game at 3-3.

Rizzi struck again in the seventh for TCNJ (6-4), plating the go-ahead run on an RBI single. It would be the difference as the rain continued to make the field unplayable.

Fleming surrendered three runs on just three hits while striking out four and walking four. Reliever Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson), who came in the game in the fifth, suffered the loss.

Gwynedd Mercy will play at Haverford tomorrow in a 3:30 p.m. start.
