In game one, GM used a late rally, scoring three in the seventh and two in the eighth to erase a 2-0 lead. Junior
Jamey Minnemyer (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) picked up the win in relief, scattering six hits with one run and five strikeouts in five innings. Sophomore
Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) came on in the ninth to collect the save.
Sophomore
Chris Hens (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had a big two-out, two-run triple as part of that seventh to give GM a brief lead. The Cougars would answer in the bottom half on an RBI sac fly to knot it up at 3-3.
After a leadoff triple from sophomore
Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) to start the ninth, he would score on a sac fly off the bat of senior
John Burns (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy). Later, freshman
Frank Saviski (Aston, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) made it 5-3 with an RBI single.
Hill came on in the ninth, but ran into trouble, as the first two batters reached base. A sacrifice bunt would put runners in scoring position with one out. He would get out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout to end it.
Marchitto along with sophomore
David Blount (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) finished 2-for-5. Blount also added a stolen base.
Game two saw Kean (2-1) score the go-ahead run in the eighth on an RBI double. The Griffins would load the bases in the ninth, but Vinny Zanfordino earned the save with a fly out.
Trailing 2-1 going into the fourth, GM took advantage of two Kean errors and used two hits to plate three runs.
A two-out RBI single in the sixth from Michael Kendall made it a 4-4 contest. Kendall would strike again with an RBI double in the following inning to give Kean the lead.
Starter
Andrew Schaefer (Penndel, Pa./Conwell-Egan) tossed six innings, yielding four runs on nine hits. Blount went 2-for-4 at the plate and stole two bases.
Gwynedd Mercy is off until Saturday when they begin their trek south to sunny Florida for their Spring Break excursion in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational where they'll play seven games in six days. First on the slate is a game with Concordia (MN) on Saturday, March 1st.
