true Gwynedd Mercy 93, Cairn 38BOX SCORELANGHORNE, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team closed out Colonial States Athletic Conference play for the first semester Saturday afternoon defeating Cairn, 93-38, in in the Highlander's home opener.
The Griffins (3-3, 2-1 CSAC) were led by
Olivia Bradford (Lansdale, Pa. / Christopher Dock) who tied her career high with 16 points.
Dee Terry (Pottstown, Pa. / Boyertown) 13 points,
Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa. / Ridley) 12 points and
Charlotte Kucowski (Philadelphia, Pa. / St. Hubert's) 11 points all reached double figures as well.
Gwynedd found themselves in an early hole, trailing 18-9 in the first half. The Griffins would respond with a 20-0 run over a six minute span to open up a double-figure lead capped by a
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa. / Norristown) free throw and a Yori layup for the 29-18 lead with 7:16 remaining in the stanza. Gwynedd would extended their lead to 19 at the half, leading 47-28. Yori led the Griffins with ten points in the half. As a team Gwynedd shot 70% (7-of-10) from downtown in the period with Bradford connecting on a pair of three pointers to close out the frame.
The Griffins keep momentum going in the second half starting the stanza with a 27-0 run, holding Cairn scoreless for an 11 minute span.
For the game the Griffins shot 48.1% (33-of-77) from the field and 52.6% (10-of-19) from downtown and held a 47-38 rebound edge.
Kucowski recorded a double-double with her thirteen rebounds, which was a career high. Matthews also grabbed ten boards. Britney Jackson grabbed eighteen rebounds for Cairn (2-4, 0-1 CSAC) while Amie Eppolito led the Highlanders with 13 points.
Gwynedd will return home Monday when they host Richard Stockton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
