BOX SCOREHUNTINGDON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy nearly rallied from a double-digit second half deficit but came up short in a 73-68 defeat at Juniata on Saturday.
Senior
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) led GM (3-6) with 16 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Olivia Halfpenny paced all scorers with 20 points off the bench for the Eagles (2-7).
Trailing by five at the half, the Griffins managed to tie it at 49-49 early in the second. The Eagles would respond with a 15-3 run to put GM win a 64-52 hole midway in the stanza. A three-point play from sophomore
Nicole Dombrowski (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and later followed by two free-throws from junior
Olivia Bradford (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) pulled Gwynedd within on (68-67) with just over five minutes to go.
Juniata was able to pull away late with free throws from the line to ice the contest.
Bradford finished with 10 points while senior
Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) added 14. As a team, the Griffins were 21-of-60 (30.0%) shooting. GM would force 30 Juniata turnovers which led to 23 points.
Gwynedd is now off until Saturday, January 3rd when they host the GM Holiday Classic. The Griffins will face Bridgewater State while Ramapo squares off with Trinity (Ct.). The consolation game and championship will take place on Sunday.
