Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) and sophomore
Arron Goodman (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) helped Gwynedd Mercy outgun Wilkes, 90-78, Saturday afternoon to capture the First National Community Bank/Monarch Classic hosted by King's.
Knight was named the Tournament MVP while he and Goodman earned spots on the all-tournament team.
Juniors
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) and
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) gave the Griffins (7-3) four double-digit scorers on the day.
Gwynedd would shoot 56% (31-of-55) from the floor including an 8-for-16 stint from downtown and a 20-for-27 effort at the free-throw line. GM would force 17 Colonel turnovers, that led to 28 points.
After going 50% shooting in the first half, where the Griffins only led 43-41 at the break, the team got hotter in the second, going at a 64% clip. Leading by nine with 9:56 to play, Knight would connect on back-to-back three-pointers to help restore a double figure lead.
Alec Wizar led five players in double figures for Wilkes (6-3) with 16 points.
Knight and Goodman also led the team with seven rebounds apiece. GM defeated the host Monarch's Friday night while Wilkes fell in overtime to Susquehanna. Saturday's other matchup saw King's take down Susquehanna, 77-67.
The Griffins are now off until 2015, when they resume action on January 7th in a CSAC matchup against Baptist Bible at the Griffin Complex starting at 7 p.m.
