Julian Hyden (Trevose, Pa./Bensalem) netted 27 points and
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) dished out 10 assists, all career highs, as Gwynedd Mercy ran past Mary Hardin-Baylor, 85-65, at the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic hosted by Stevenson University Saturday evening.
The Griffins (3-1) rattled off 14 three-pointers on the night, five from junior
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge), four from Hyden, and three from sophomore
Aaron Goodman (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North). Hennessey finished with 17 points while Goodman had 19.
After GM raced out to a 7-0 lead, the Crusaders battled to take a 15-13 lead off a trey from Kevin Waller with 13 minutes in the first. But from there, the Griffins went on a 13-2 run capped off by a longball from Artis. Later in the half, Hennessey would hit back-to-back treys, giving Gwynedd a double-digit lead, which they would not relinquish the rest of the way. GM would lead 42-30 at the break.
Gwynedd shot 44% in the first 20 minutes, but would connect at a 16-for-31 clip (51.6%) in the second to help push their advantage to high as 30.
Waller would led MHB (1-2) with 13 points while Russell Green added 12. As a team, the Cru was 40% (24-of-60) from the floor.
Junior
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) chipped in six points, a team-high eight boards, five assists and a pair of steals. GM would turn 13 Crusader turnovers into 17 points.
The Griffins will return to action on Tuesday when they welcome Keystone as both teams open CSAC play. Tip off from the Griffin Complex is slated for 7 p.m.
