PHOTO GALLERY (scroll to the bottom of the page)OWINGS MILLS, MD. -- Catholic handed Gwynedd Mercy its first loss of the season as the Griffins fell, 68-63, at the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic hosted by Stevenson University.
The Griffins would lead by four at the half and get increase their edge to as much as eight (45-37) early in the second but the Cardinals would use a 10-1 run to take their first lead of the stanza with 13:12 to play.
Tied at 57-57 with 5:45 left, junior
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) hit one of his three three-pointers on the night only to see Catholic counter with a trey from Bryson Fonville. It would be the only field goal for GM over the next five minutes, as the Cardinals built a 66-61 edge with 26 ticks on the clock.
Aaron Goodman (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) would make two and draw a foul for a chance at a three-point play  with five seconds left, but the free throw was no good and into enemy hands, where Catholic was able to hit two more trips at the line to finalize the score.
Artis and Goodman each finished with 13 points. Sophomore
Cedric Elleby (Monroeville, N.J./Delsea) added 12. Goodman and Elleby also snared six boards apiece. Artis dished out five assists.
Fonville totaled 18 points for CUA while Corey Stanford led all scorers with 19.
Gwynedd (2-1) was 24-for-51 (47.1%) from the floor and 7-of-20 from downtown. The Cardinals (2-1) were good from 43.1% (22-of-51) including 20-of-26 from the free-throw line.
The Griffins will return tomorrow to face Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 p.m.
