BOX SCORECLARKS SUMMIT, PA -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball Team traveled up the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike Wednesday night in defeating the Defenders of Baptist Bible, 90-70, in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.
Freshman
Arron Goodman (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) led all scorers with a game-high 27 points and snared a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore
Julian Hyden (Trevose, Pa. / Bensalem) and
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa. / LaSalle College H.S.), along with junior
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest) all contributed double figures to help the Griffins in the scoring column; Hyden with 13, Knight with 12 and Artis with 10.
Goodman scored the first six points out of the gate to put Gwynedd up on top. Later, Artis would connect on a three ball to stretch the lead to 11 (14-3). Goodman would continue to dominate, scoring his 13th point of the stanza at the midway mark of the half, putting GM ahead, 22-10. Hyden hit a three pointer as the buzzer sounded to give Gwynedd a 51-29 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Knight would give the Griffins their largest lead of the game (56-31) after he connected from downtown at the 17:46 mark. BBC (3-7, 0-3 CSAC) wouldn't back down, battling back to cut the deficit all the way down to seven with 8:23 showing on the clock.
Gwynedd was able to right the sails and stretched the lead back up to double digits on a three-point play from
Seth Heinicke (Warminster, Pa. / Calvary) followed by a trey from Knight to help pull away for good.
The Griffins shot a blistering 55.2% from the field (32-of-58), while also shooting 50.0% from downtown, hitting a season-high 13 treys. The Griffins also received huge production from their bench, outscoring BBC 35-17.
GM also held an advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Defenders, 28-24. 10 of those rebounds were on the offensive side, and lead to 14 second-chance points.
The Griffins continue their road swing on Saturday when they travel to Rosemont in CSAC play. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
