BOX SCORE

READING, PA. -- Alvernia scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a tie contest as Gwynedd-Mercy fell to the Crusaders, 6-3, on Wednesday.

After the Griffins tied it at 3-3 with a run in the top of the eighth on a Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) two-out RBI single, Alvernia (15-8) crossed three in the bottom of the frame on an error and later a two-run single from Billy Turner.

The teams would trade a run in the third, Gwynedd, using a solo home run from junior John Burns (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) and Alvernia, scoring a run off a bunt single with an error with a runner on.

Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) made it 3-2 with his sac fly RBI in the fifth, but the Crusaders countered with a two-spot in the bottom of the inning on two hits and an error. GM was guilty of five errors in the contest, a season high.

Gwynedd looked to answer back in the seventh, getting a lead-off double from Marchitto followed by back-to-back walks to load the bases with nobody out, but the Griffins, who left 12 men on base, stranded all three runners.

Starter Andrew Schaefer (Penndel, Pa./Conwell-Egan) threw into the eighth, striking out five with one walk on seven hits. Two of the six runs were earned.

Marchitto was 2-for-5. Teammate Rick Elfreth (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine) had three hits for Gwynedd (11-8).

The Griffins welcome Wesley tomorrow in a 4 p.m. start.
