ASTON, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy and Neumann played to a doubleheader split in CSAC action on Saturday. The Griffins took game one, 10-2, but lost the second, 6-5.

In game one, senior Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) became the program's all-time leader in runs scored after he crossed home on a RBI groundout in the first inning. He would score again in the third.

The Knights countered with a run of their own in the bottom half on a sac fly.

Leading 3-2 going into the fifth, the Griffins (20-16, 12-6 CSAC) broke it open with five runs. Freshman Christopher Hens (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), who was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, added a two-run double in the sixth. Sophomore Greg Brooks (Voorhees, N.J./St. Joseph's PA) had three hits and scored twice.

Starter Rich Young (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) went four innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Junior Trevor Sotell (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) worked the final three innings for the save.

Neumann starter Russ Gilliam lasted into the fifth, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits.

Game two saw the Knights (26-10, 13-5 CSAC) open up a lead in the middle innings only to see GM come up short in a final inning rally. The Griffins trailed 6-1 going in to the seventh, but scored four runs and tried for more. With the bases loaded with two outs, junior Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) delivered a single to center to score two.  Freshman Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern), who was on first, was thrown out at third trying to advance to end the game.

Freshman DJ Mallon (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) went five innings in his first collegiate start, yielding three earned runs on four hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Sophomore Eric Heaney (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) went 3-for-3 with two runs and a double. Freshman Chris Carmolingo (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine) had a  pair of hits and an RBI.

Gwynedd-Mercy has now clinched the #3 seed in next weekend's CSAC Tournament. The Knights are #2 while Centenary claims the #4 seed. Keystone is the #1 seed will host the double elimination tournament at Bear Stadium in Boyertown this weekend. Gwynedd will face Neumann in the second game on Friday at approximately 5:30 p.m. while the Giants take on the Cyclones at 2 p.m.
