GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – A three-run seventh helped Gwynedd-Mercy defeat Arcadia, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon to win their fourth game in a row.
The Knights (18-12-1) got on the scoreboard early as they plated two runs in the top of the first inning on three hits. The Griffins were unable to get on the board until the fourth inning when sophomore
Rick Elfreth (Washington Twp, N.J. / St. Augustine) led off the inning with a solo shot to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After that first inning, the pitching trio of sophomore
Jamey Minnemeyer (Lansdale, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic), freshman
Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa. / Conwell-Egan) and fellow freshman
Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa. / Octorara) held the Knights scoreless over the next eight innings. Minneymeyer worked six strong innings, retiring 13 batters in a row at one point from the second to sixth. Fleming worked two solid innings in relief to pick up the win and Hill closed the door in the ninth to pick up his sixth save on the season.
Trailing 2-1, the Griffins (19-10) plated three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. With one on and one out, the Griffins called on freshman
Mike Marchitto (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern) to pinch hit and he came through with an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Senior
Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa. / St. Pius X) drove in Marchitto with a triple to take the lead 3-2. Junior
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) added the third run of the frame with an RBI single to plate Martin.
Blount would add an insurance run in the eighth, scoring Elfreth on a fielder's choice with runners on second and third.
Hill closed out the ninth getting a fly out to Elfreth to end the game.
Martin, Cassano, and
Ryan Downs (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) each had two hits at the plate.
The Griffins will travel on Friday to La Plume, Pa. to start a big three-game series with Keystone College at 3 p.m. The Griffins will host the Giants on Saturday for a conference twin bill, first pitch is scheduled for noon.
