FLEMINGTON, N.J. -- Gwynedd-Mercy and Centenary split a Colonial States Athletic Conference Doubleheader on Thursday with the Griffins taking game one, 4-0, but falling in the nightcap, 5-3.
The games were played at Centenary (Diamond Nation – Flemington, N.J.), but GM was designated as the home team for both as the Griffin field was not playable due to the recent weather.
Game one saw junior
Andrew Schaefer (Penndel, Pa./Conwell Egan) almost went the distance going 6 and a 1/3 innings before being lifted with the bases loaded in the seventh. He allowed just two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Junior
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) had three hits, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. His solo home run in the second got the Griffins on the board. He would later score in the fourth off an RBI double from sophomore
Rick Elfreth (Washington Twp., N.J./St. Augustine).
In the sixth, a pair of Centenary errors led to two more runs, all with two outs to make it a 4-0 lead. Schaefer, who hadn't let a batter reach base since the third, looked to work out of a jam in the seventh. After a lead-off single followed by a walk, Schaefer induced two-straight pop ups and was one out away from a win. After another walk, freshman
Andrew Hill (Christiana, Pa./Octorara) came on in relief and got pinch hitter Quay Mayo out on a grounder to first.
In game two, the Cyclone's Joe Forcellini went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, while GM (7-5, 2-1 CSAC) was held to just four hits in the 5-3 loss.
Senior
Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a stolen base. Freshman
David Blount (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) reached base via a walk in all three plate appearances and scored twice.
Tied 1-1 going into the fourth, Centenary (6-8-1, 1-2 CSAC)took a lead on an RBI double from Sean Hunter. The next inning, the Cyclones tacked on two more as Forcellini would score on a wild pitch from third and Kevin Litus added a run-scoring single for a three-run lead.
GM pulled within one in the fifth when the Griffins plated two runs with two outs. An RBI single from sophomore
Greg Brooks (Voorhees, N.J./St. Joe's Prep) and passed ball run for Blount made it 4-3.
Sophomore
Sean Muscovitch (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) entered in the sixth for starter
Jamey Minnemeyer (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) but would yield a run on a two-out RBI double from Forcellini.
Minnemeyer was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits in five innings. He struck out seven with one walk.
With the inclement weather in the region, this weekend's series with Marywood has been altered with all three games at Gwynedd-Mercy. Friday's home game with the Pacers will now take place on Sunday in a noon start. Saturday's DH, originally scheduled to be played in Scranton and also with a noon start, will now take place in Gwynedd Valley.
