READING, PA. -- Behind 22 hits, Gwynedd-Mercy struck early and often in a 17-3 win at Penn State-Berks on Wednesday.
The Griffins (5-4) plated runs in the first four innings including a six-run second to go up 13-0.
Senior
Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X), sophomore
Rick Elfreth (Washington Twp., N.J./St. Augustine) and freshman
David Blount (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) each had three hits apiece. Martin drove in three runs while Blount scored three times and Elfreth knocked in a run and scored twice.
Sophomore
Jamey Minnemeyer (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) gave up just two runs on four hits in five innings with two K's and two walks to pick up the win. Freshman
Beau Fleming (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan) went the rest of the way, yielding just one run on five hits.
GM also took advantage of six PSU-Berks errors, which led to seven unearned runs.
Christian Marcin added a two-run single for the Lions (3-5).
Gwynedd-Mercy kicks off CSAC play this weekend with a series with Centenary. Friday's single game will take place at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J. at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the teams will meet in a DH here in Gwynedd Valley starting at noon.
