WINTER HAVEN, Fl. -- The Griffins split a pair of games Friday with RIT, dropping game one, 4-3, and winning game two, 12-2, to close out their spring break trip with a 4-3 record. Also a career school record was broken in the process.
In the first game, Gwynedd fell behind 4-0 but put together a three-run sixth inning to make it a one run game. Senior
Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) tacked a big two-run double and junior
John Burns (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) added an RBI groundout to cut the deficit. The Tigers were able to keep the Griffins at bay in a 1-2-3 7th to keep Gwynedd off the board.
Game two saw Martin become the all-time leader in stolen bases. He had two swipes to give him 76, suprassing former Griffin Mark Mattes (2006-08).
The Griffin bats come to life, scoring two runs in the third and four runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Sophomore
Matt Rakus (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine) picked up his second win of the season pitching six strong innings, scattering two runs on seven hits while fanning four.
Freshman
Kurt Taylor (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) was 2-4 from the plate and totaled three RBIs. Junior
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) was 2-4 as well with two RBIs with a double and a triple. Martin was 2-3 at the plate knocking in two runs.
The Griffins venture on the road this week traveling to Kean on Tuesday and Swarthmore on Wednesday. They finish the week on Friday at Haverford. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. for all three games.
