ASTON, PA. – All five starters finished in double figures to help Gwynedd-Mercy run away from Neumann, 82-52, Wednesday night.
The Griffins (16-8, 12-3 CSAC), who shot a season-best 51% (30-of-58) on the evening, will host Rosemont in the regular season finale on Saturday with the winner earning the #2 playoff seed and a first-round bye in next week's CSAC Tournament.
GM used a 10-0 run midway in the first to build a double-digit lead and held the Knights to under 30% from the floor which would lead to a 12-point halftime edge. It was more of the same in the second as the Griffins used a 57% shooting clip to gradually increase their lead to 20 and kept a comfortable margin throughout.
Junior
Nicole Dougherty (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) had a team-high 14 points. Sophomores
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and
Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) each netted 12 apiece. Juniors
Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) added 11 and
Jordan Dominic (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) chipped in 10.
Matthews grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double on the season. Smith tallied five steals which tied a personal best.
Bethany Humenik scored 19 points for Neumann (13-12, 11-4 CSAC).
Saturday's game vs. Rosemont will start at 2 p.m. The 2013 CSAC Women's Basketball Tournament begins on Monday, February 18th in first round action. The semifinal round takes place on Wednesday, the 20th with the championship on the 23rd.
