Gwynedd Mercy 57, Neumann 56
BOX SCORE
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated Neumann, 57-56, in dramatic fashion Wednesday night in front of a packed crowd at the Griffin Complex.
The Griffins (4-3, 2-1 CSAC) were led by a career-high performance from sophomore
Julian Hyden (Trevose, Pa. / Bensalem) as he led Gwynedd with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. His putback underneath off a miss gave GM a late lead and the Griffins survived a late three-point attempt to pick up the win.
Freshman
Arron Goodman (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) chipped in 13 points along with 11 rebounds to record his sixth double-double of the season and junior
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest) rounded out the double-digit scoring, netting 10 points.
Gwynedd would take the lead early in the first half and would stretch it seven points when junior
Seth Heinicke (Warminster, Pa. / Calvary) knocked down a trey to put GM on top, 17-10 with just under ten minutes to play. Neumann would take their first lead of the game late in the half on a pair of free throws from Reggie Coleman to put the Knights ahead, 23-22. Neumann would head into the intermission holding  onto the lead after Mark Blount beat the buzzer on a breakaway layup off a midcourt steal to give the Knights a 30-28 lead.
Both teams played even to start the second period as the teams were deadlocked 34-34 marking the seventh tie of the game. Hyden would give GM their largest lead of the half (48-42) when he slammed home a monster jam off a steal from
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) at the 9:34 mark.
However the Knights would not go away, and retook the lead on a Kevin Green three-pointer to go back ahead, 54-52. With less than three minutes remaining in the half, the Griffins found themselves down three points. Artis cut the deficit to one with his driving layup with just over one minute remaining. The Griffins defense forced a Neumann turnover which gave GM a chance to take the lead. Hyden would answer, striking again this time scoring off a miss from Goodman.
Neumann had one last chance to win the game but Rich Whitten's three-point effort hit the back of the rim.
The Griffins received great contribution from their bench, outscoring the Knights 26-5. Gwynedd also controlled the glass, 40-36, turning fifteen offensive rebounds into eighteen second chance points.
DeShawn Lowman led the Knights (3-3, 1-2 CSAC) with 16 points. Mark Blount and Coleman each added 14. Blount also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Prior to the game, head coach
John Baron was honored for recording his 200th win by receiving a plaque from Athletic Director
Keith Mondillo.
The Griffins will hit the road this weekend traveling to Cairn University in CSAC action on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
