GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy ended a three-game skid and remained unbeaten in conference play with a 68-62 home win over Centenary at the Griffin Complex Monday evening.
Sophomore
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) led the Griffins (6-6, 5-0 CSAC) with 18 points. He hit three of the team's nine three-pointers on the night. Freshman
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) added 11 points and six assists and sophomore
Colin Gates (Boca Raton, Fl./Grandview Prep) chipped in eight points and six boards.
Gates' only trey came at an opportune time, breaking a 55-55 tie with 5:20 to play. He would later grab a key defensive rebound in a four-point game with under a minute to go to help seal the win.
Andy Charles led the Cyclones (5-8, 2-4 CSAC) with 21 points.
GM jumped out to a 15-7 lead but Centenary answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Max Hughes and Kenneth Brown and later a bucket from Clayton Roker, and the Cyclones were back on top. The teams stayed within arm's reach the rest of the stanza, as the Griffins would squeeze out a 37-35 lead at the break.
It was more of the same in the second as each team could not distance themselves from one another. Gates' big three-pointer looked to give the Griffins some breathing room, but Centenary wouldn't go away. With the score 66-62 with under 30 seconds to play, Gates would come up with a rebound off a three-point miss. Two free throws from Knight would help ice the win for GM.
The Griffins were 23-of-55 (41.8%) from the floor and held a 30-25 rebound edge. After shooting almost 60% in the first, Centenary was held to just 10-of-26 and 0-for-8 from downtown in the second.
Gwynedd-Mercy will get back at it on Wednesday when they travel to Rosemont for a conference tilt starting at 8 p.m.
