ROSEMONT, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy suffered their second conference loss as Rosemont went on to a 99-77 win over the Griffins Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins (12-7, 8-2 CSAC) used a 20-4 run to close the first half to lead, 34-31 at the break, but it was the Ravens who used a run of their own in the second, a 23-1 spurt, to pull away for good.
Sophomore
Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led GM with 17 points.
Kristen Fuery (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) added 16 off the bench while
Nicole Dougherty (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) and
Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) each had 11 points.
Rosemont's Ashley Montecchio scored 30 of her game-high 40 points in the second half. She added 10 rebounds, seven blocks, five steals, and four assists. Teammate Liz Coyne added 28 points and 16 caroms as the Ravens (12-7, 9-3 CSAC) shot 66.7% (20-of-30) in the second half.
Gwynedd was under 30% shooting in the first half, and would trail by as much as 13 with six minutes to go in the stanza. That's when GM put together a scoring stretch, capped by a three-pointer from sophomore
Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) to regain the lead.
Two free throws from Smith gave the Griffins their largest lead (41-33) before Rosemont would rally to tie it a 49-49 on a Montecchio layup. From there, the Ravens took advantage of five Gwynedd turnovers over a five minute span take a lead which they would not relinquish.
Yori finished with six points while sophomore
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) pulled down a team-high nine boards. Gwynedd committed a season-high 30 turnovers.
The Griffins are off until Wednesday when they host Immaculata as part of CSAC Doubleheader. Women tip it off at 6 p.m. while the men follow at 8 p.m.
