HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Centenary sank two free throws with six seconds to edge Gwynedd-Mercy as the Griffins fell to the Cyclones in a close 76-75 decision.
The Griffins looked for a last chance attempt but a shot did not fall, sending Gwynedd to their third loss in their last four games.
Freshman
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) led GM with 18 points, but the Griffins saw a double-digit second-half lead evaporate. The Cyclones, who shot 31% in the first half, was good for a 15-of-26 (57%) clip in the second.
Warren Murphy and Max Hughes each had 16 points for Centenary. Andy Charles added 13 points and 13 rebounds. The teams combined for 22 three-pointers, 12 for the Griffins, and 10 for Centenary.
Gwynedd led the entire first half and took a 38-29 edge into the lockerroom. A three-pointer from freshman
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) would give GM their biggest lead of the game (52-40) with 13 minutes remaining.
A 22-8 run by Centenary capped off with a trey from Djovan Beausejour to give the Cyclones their first lead of the game(62-60) with 6:40 to play. GM would fall behind by six with just over two minutes, but rally with three-pointers from Hennessey and
Brendan Stanton (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic), the latter coming with 36 ticks for a 75-74 lead.
Murphy was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit both from the line to reclaim the lead. On the transition up the court, Gwynedd had the ball knocked out before the final horn errantly sounded. The officials added 0.3 seconds to the game clock to give GM a last shot, but a heave towards the net didn't go.
Stanton finished with seven points while Hennessy had nine.
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) added 12 points and
Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J./Mainland) had 10. Knight and freshman
Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) each collected a team-high seven rebounds. GM shot 39% (24-of-61) for the game while Centenary was 25-of-58 (43%).
Gwynedd-Mercy is back at it on Wednesday when they take on Immaculata as part of a CSAC Doubleheader.
