FLEMINGTON, N.J. -- Gwynedd-Mercy swept a Colonial States Athletic Conference Doubleheader at Centenary on Saturday, giving the Griffins their first CSAC victories on the season. GM won a close game one, 5-4, and cruised in an 11-2 game two win.
Freshman
Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine) fanned eight while scattering two runs on six hits in six innings in game two, as the Griffins (12-14, 2-6 CSAC) scored 11 runs on 10 hits and used Centenary's nine walks and two hit batters. Sophomore
John Burns (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) drove in three runs while going 2-for-2 while junior
Shane Lynch (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) added a pair of doubles and two RBI's.
Trailing 2-1 going into the third, GM plated six runs to take a commanding seven-run lead. Burns would add a two-run double in the fourth and a run-scoring single tacked with an RBI double from junior
Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) in the fifth.
It was more than enough for Elfreth, who shook off a shaky first inning, where the Cyclones scored two runs. He struck out four over his final two innings of work to cap the twinbill sweep.
In game one, Burns' RBI single in the fourth was the go-ahead run to break a 4-4 game.
Sophomore
Andrew Schaefer (Penndel, Pa./Conwell-Egan) was the winner in the first game, tossing a complete game with four strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs on 10 hits.
The Griffins would score four runs in the very first inning on RBI singles from sophomore
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), freshman
Jordano Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa./Mariana Bracetti) and pair of bases loaded walks from sophomore
Josh Van Horn (Brookhaven, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and freshman
Eric Heaney (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham).
After an unearned run in the second, the Cyclones (10-16, 5-6 CSAC) added three more in the third highlighted by a two-run homerun from Joe Forcellini.
GM looked to tack on some insurance runs in the sixth, getting the bases loaded with one out, but reliever Chad Frankenfield got Cassano to ground into a double play to squash the threat.
Schaefer allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings, including a 1-2-3 seventh to lock it down.
Martin was 1-for-2, but scored and walked twice. Elfreth also walked twice and added two stolen bases.
Gwynedd will go for the series sweep on Monday when the two teams meet in a nine-inning affair in Gwynedd Valley starting at 3 p.m.
