GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy and Marywood battled to a split in a CSAC Doubleheader on Saturday. The Pacers took game one, 4-0, and the Griffins won the second, 11-5.

Gwynedd (23-16, 11-7 CSAC) clinches the #3 seed in next week's CSAC Tournament and will take on #2 Neumann on Friday at 5:30 from Bear Stadium in Boyertown.

In game one, the Griffins were limited to three hits and the Pacers took advantage of three GM errors in the loss. Marywood scored twice in the third on just one hit and two Griffin mistakes.

Gwynedd looked to have something brewing in the fifth, getting the bases loaded with no outs. Ryan Pelle, who entered earlier in the inning for starter Tim Freda, got back-to-back strikeouts and an inning-ending groundout to third to keep the Griffins off the board.

In the seventh, three hits along with an error off a sacrifice bunt, allowed MU to add two more runs.

Starter Jamey Minnemeyer (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) went five innings, striking out five with just one walk while yielding the two earned runs.

Game two saw Gwynedd pound out 14 hits and exploit eight Marywood errors. Sophomore Justin Keith (Littlestown, Pa./Delone Catholic) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, and RBI, and a stolen base. Senior Kevin Smeraglio (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost) and Shane Lynch (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) added RBI triples as the Griffins built a 6-0 lead after three.

But Marywood (22-16, 9-9 CSAC) answered as Steve Wade hit a two-run double in the fourth and the team plated three in the fifth and suddenly it was a one-run contest.

GM took control for good in the bottom of the fifth as Keith knocked in a run and would later score on Smeraglio's triple. Lynch then followed with his own triple to score Smeraglio and the ensuing throw to third went out of play to allow Lynch to walk home to make it a 10-5 lead.

Smeraglio added a bases loaded sac fly in the sixth.

Starter Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine) scattered five runs (two earned) on six hits over four innings with five K's and two walks. The tandem of J.P Harris (East Norriton, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick) and Casey Clark (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief.

The Griffins will play at Wesley on Tuesday in a non-league tilt beginning at 4 p.m.
