true Widener 5, Gwynedd-Mercy 4
BOX SCORE
CHESTER, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy had their eight game win streak end as Widener scored a winning run in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Griffins, 5-4, on Tuesday.
The Griffins (17-15) battled back from a 4-1 deficit with a run in the ninth to tie, but Widener (19-15) used three-straight hits, including a walk-off RBI single from Dan Sieracki.
Sophomore
John Burns (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Junior
Josh Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
Senior
Andrew Sinon (Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan) struck out eight over seven innings to help keep GM in the game.
Burns' RBI double with two outs in the first to plate Martin gave GM a 1-0 lead, but Widener (19-15) answered with a four-spot in the second.
The Griffins would take advantage of some errors in the fourth and fifth to score a run in each inning and a big defensive play to end the seventh kept the game close. With two on, Widener's Matt Hone singled to right, but freshman
Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine) threw out Sean Saverio, who was trying to score from second, at home plate to remain a one-run game.
Burns would score Martin again in the ninth on an RBI single to knot it at 4-4.
Sophomore
Casey Clark (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame), who suffered the loss, entered in the eighth for Sinon, and got a 1-2-3 inning. In the ninth, he gave up a lead-off single and an infield bunt hit to Saverio before Sieracki ended it with a hit to right center.
At the plate, Elfreth was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Senior
Kevin Smeraglio (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost) went 2-for-5 with stolen base, his sixth in as many games.
Hone was 2-for-4 while Saverio was 2-for-5 with a double.
Gwynedd-Mercy will open up a CSAC Weekend series with Philadelphia Biblical on Friday here in Gwynedd Valley starting at 3 p.m. The two teams continue play on Saturday in a doubleheader in Langhorne beginning at noon.
