GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Swarthmore took a late lead to go on and defeat Gwynedd-Mercy, 7-3, in non-league action on Tuesday.
The Griffins led 2-1 before the Garnet plated three in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a lead.
Junior
Shane Lynch (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and sophomore
Dante Cassano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) each had two hits. Lynch also stole three bases and scored twice.
Gwynedd (8-6) scored a run in the second and in the third without collecting a hit. In the second,
Josh Van Horn's (Brookhaven, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) RBI sac fly put the Griffins (8-5) up 1-0. In the second, Lynch reached first on a hit by pitch, would steal second and third. After a walk to put runners on the corners, a throw down to second on an attempted double steal allowed Lynch to score from third for a 2-0 advantage.
Starter
Rick Elfreth (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Augustine), who struck out six and threw six-plus innings, got into some trouble in the seventh. After a lead-off single and a double, Swarthmore's Tim Kwilos drove a ball to the fence in left for a two-run triple for their first lead of the game. Kwilos would later score on a sac fly for a 4-2 lead.
Kwilos struck again in the eighth as his RBI double capped a three-run frame.
For the game, he finished 3-for-4 with a homerun shy of the cycle. Danny McMahon was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
Cassano got a run back in the eighth with an RBI single.
Swarthmore's Ignacio Rodriguez went into the eighth, scattering seven hits with eight strikeouts.
