Second-Half Surge Helps Griffins Conquer Giants

LAPLUME, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy went on a 22-7 early in the second half to go on and defeat Keystone, 83-69 for their third win in a row Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) was one rebound shy of a double-double, totaling a team-high 19 points and nine boards. Senior Brendan Stanton (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and freshman Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) each poured in 13 apiece respectively as the Griffins (4-3, 3-0 CSAC) remain unbeaten in conference play.

Gwynedd shot over 55% in the second half and would turn a 41-41 tie game early in the period to a 63-48 edge with 8:28 remaining. Knight would put the stamp on the surge, hitting one of the team's eight three-pointers.

The Giants (4-4, 2-1 CSAC), led by Duncan Lansford's game-high 20 points, tried to claw back in it as his lay in with five minutes to go cut the Griffin lead to six (63-57). Freshman Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt), who scored all nine of his points in the second, put together a bucket off a free throw miss and two hits from the line on consecutive possessions to help restore a double-digit lead.

Freshman Larry Jones III (Woodbine, N.J./Holy Spirit) snared eight rebounds while Barnes grabbed seven. Jones also scored nine points.

Greg Westry netted 15 and Dan Candemeres scored 14 as the Giants took 36 three-point attempts, making nine and shot 40.3% for the game.

The Griffins will get back at it on Saturday when they travel to Baptist Bible for a conference tilt starting at 1 p.m.
