SCRANTON, PA. – Four players reached double figures as Gwynedd-Mercy held off Marywood, 81-65, in the Griffin's CSAC Opener Monday night.
Senior
Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J./Mainland) paced GM with 14 points while sophomore
John Davis (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) hit three of the team's 10 three-pointers to finish with a career-high 12 points. Sophomore
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) chipped in 11 and freshman
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) added 10.
The Pacers' Matt Tintle led all scorers with 22 points. Andrew Andrle scored 11 while three others netted 10.
Gwynedd started the game on a 15-2 spurt, only to see Marywood battle back to tie it at 21-21 midway in the first half on a three-pointer from Tintle. GM would run off the next 12 points over a six-minute span capped off with treys from Davis and freshman
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge). The Griffins hit seven of their 10 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes to help them to a 40-32 edge at the half.
Marywood chipped away at the Griffin lead and would tie it at 48-48 early on in the second as Tintle struck again from downtown. Gwynedd was able to fight ahead and keep a lead for good when Davis connected from behind the arc to restore a double-digit lead with 8:49 left.
The Griffins shot over 50% for the game, hitting 28-of-51 attempts from the floor and held an overwhelming rebound edge, 45-24. Freshmen
Larry Jones III (Woodbine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and
Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) each grabbed 11 rebounds apiece.
Gwynedd-Mercy battles Neumann in a CSAC Doubleheader on Wednesday at the Griffin Complex. The women tip it off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
