WILKES-BARRE, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated King's, 80-70, Monday night behind four players in double figures and 12 three-pointers.

Sophomore Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led all scorers with 23 points, tying a career high.

Early on with the score tied 10 apiece the Griffins (2-2) went on a 9-0 run capped off by a three pointer by sophomore Kristen Fuery (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin), one of six from the Griffins in the stanza. Gwynedd would stretch the lead to thirteen, their largest of the game, when junior Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) nailed a three ball to put the Griffins on top 25-12. Smith would strike again from downtown to beat the buzzer to put GM up 35-25 at the half.

The Monarchs looked to rally in the second but Wassel, who scored 17 over points in the half, would put the Griffins back on top by seven (60-53) with a lay-up and on the next possession Fuery would connect on a three pointer to put GM up 63-53 with 7:04 left. 

Smith knocked down four treys to finish with 16 points. Fuery and sophomore Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) each knocked down three apiece. Fuery and Yori each scored in double figures scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.

The Griffins shot 47.5% (28-of-59) from the field as their defense held King's (2-2) to 35.2% (25-of-71). The Monarchs placed three players in double figures with Katlin Michaels netting 18. Marissa Manning scored 17 and Celia Rader added 16.

Gwynedd outrebounded King's 42-40. Wassel and Smith pulled down seven each for the Griffins. Michaels grabbed eight for the Monarchs.

The Griffins return to action on Saturday kicking off CSAC play hosting Centenary for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Griffin Complex.
