GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Four players finished in double figures while the team hit 15 three-pointers as Gwynedd-Mercy won its season opener in a 96-53 win over Penn State-Abington Friday night in the 2012 GMC Tip-off Tournament.
The Griffins will face Montclair State,
who were 79-53 winners over Salisbury in the first game on Friday, tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the championship game. The Lions and the Sea Gulls will meet in the consolation game at noon.
Junior
Lauren Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and sophomore
Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) each had 15 points as Gwynedd opened the second half on a 14-0 run to put Penn State-Abington in their rearview mirrors.
Junior
Jordan Dominic (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added 13 and junior
Nicole Dougherty (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) chipped in 11.
Smith drained five of the team's 15 treys on the night. As a team it was the most since an 88-82 win at Gettysburg on January 4th, 2006.
Trish Watson led the Nittany Lions with a game-high 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including six three-pointers.
Each team had 24 defensive rebounds, but the Griffins were able to add 18 offensive ones, which led to 16 second-chance points. Sophomore
Natasha Matthews (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) pulled down a team-high nine.
After shooting 37.8% (17-of-45) in the first half and a 14-point lead at the break, GM lit it up on a 62.9% clip (22-of-35) in the second.
The 15 points, along with five steals, were career-highs for Smith. Dominic and sophomore
Kristen Fuery (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) each hit three three-pointers each.
